Playstation 2 games playable on the Playstation 4? Wha…..time for a double take. According to Wired the company is “working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation.” To make things even more interesting is the fact that apparently the emulation technology has always been in the Playstation 4 (mostly) but Sony had not publicly confirmed its existence, until now.
“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” Sony told Wired in an email, adding “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”
This would be a huge boon for Playstation 4 owners given the vast library of games from if not the best, certainly the best selling video game console of all time.
The Playstation 2 featured many blockbuster titles still capable of attracting fans today, serving as a potential bridge to the current generation if you were one of the 5 people to never own a Playstation 2.
This rumor had been in the gaming ether for some time now as Digital Foundry made a claim two years ago, in January 2014, that a Sony source had confirmed to them that PlayStation 2, as well as original PlayStation emulation was in the works for the PlayStation 4, with the possibly of HD touches.
Beyond just that though there had been many clues pointing to in this direction: the appearance of the classic PlayStation 2 logo before the games load, the inclusion of an emulation system for memory cards, and the automatic mapping of old controller buttons on to the new Dual Shock 4.
Now, three legacy Star Wars games are available as part of a Star Wars Battlefront PlayStation 4 bundle—Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter and Star Wars: Racer Revenge— which would seem to be an obvious part of the emulation initiative, but Sony has not admitted that as of yet.
However, up until now it was all conjuncture. Now that Sony has publicly made a statement the only questions remaining are: how will they implement this, and when?
My vote would be that they find a way to allow users to pop those PlayStation 2 discs directly into their shiny PlayStation 4 and allow the players to get to playing the games they already may own or may end up owning thanks to the secondary market.
However they do it chances are this is just the start of a campaign meant to offset any momentum that Microsoft may have gained with its recent switch to supporting its most popular legacy game system by including emulation support for over 100 Xbox 360 titles with the promise of more to come.
